Reflections in America

It　is end of　November　2013．Yellow leaves, red leaves, brown leaves fall to the ground because of the strong winds in the Midwest, here in the Kansas City area. Thanksgiving, a national holiday, is cerebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, which falls on the 28^th this year. This is a day for ‘thanks’ and ‘giving’.

Everyone from North to South, East to West cerebrates this wonderful holiday gathering with their family members. A large cooked turkey is usually on the table as the center of the feast. In December another big holiday is coming - that is Christmas Day.

I am extremely sorry for the loss of Professor Amano, Dr. Utsumi, and my good friend, Masako Saito. Professor Amano asked me to be an interpreter to help two Professors from Rochester University who attended the Science Conference held at the building next to our University at Inage. This was when I was still a student in 1962, but I remember this honor very clearly. Dr. Utsumi was a good friend as well. He came to see us in America, twice. I cannot believe what had happened to Masako. Her family in Cambodia disappeared without a trace in the Vietnam War.

Many years ago, when I first arrived in the United States, I felt as though I were a total stranger. I have travelled by a cargo ship across the Pacific Ocean and my first sight of America was sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge. After awhile I decided to learn more English language, American customs and life-style, and other aspect of the culture by getting involved with the public. Yes, I had a hard time adjusting myself to the society, but I did not give up on learning. I worked at a large Retail business store as a part of the Management for 12 years. That was indeed, a good experience in learning the business and was very helpful in getting to know the different types of people through my daily work in the store.

2013年の11月末のカンザスです(執筆依頼は11月中旬)。黄色い葉、赤い葉、褐色の葉が、中西部のここカンザス市の強風に吹きあげられて地面に舞い降りています。

国民の休日　感謝祭は、11月の第4木曜日に行われますが今年は28日になります。

この日は「感謝」と「捧げる」の日です。　全米の北から南、東から西迄　家族全員で、この素晴らしい休日を祝います。通常、調理された大きな七面鳥が饗宴のテーブルの中心に置かれます。12月には又別の休日がやってきます — それはクリスマスです。

私は天野教授、内海博士そして私の親友斎藤雅子さんの死を非常に悼みます。

天野教授からは、千葉大稲毛キャンパスの隣のビルで行われた科学会議に出席したロチェスター大学の2人の教授の通訳として手伝ってほしいと依頼されました。それはまだ私が学生だった1962年のことでしたが、今も私は明瞭にこの名誉な出来事をおぼえています。内海博士も又同様に良い友達でした。　彼はアメリカに2回会いに来てくれました。　

雅子に起きたことは信じられません。ベトナム戦争中にカンボジアで彼女の一家は何の痕跡も残さず消えてしまったのです。

何年も前に　私が初めてアメリカに着いた時、私は全くの異邦人である事を感じました。

巨大な貨物船に乗り太平洋を横断し、初めに目にしたアメリカは、ゴールデンゲートブリッジ(金門橋)の下を航行したことでした。　しばらくして私はアメリカの市民と交わる為に、英語、アメリカの習慣、ライフスタイル及び文化の様々な側面を、もっと勉強しようと決意しました。そうです、私は社会に自分自身を合わせるためにつらい時期を過ごしましたが学ぶ事は諦めませんでした。巨大小売業のビジネスの経営陣の一角に参画してもう12年になります。これは実にアメリカのビジネスを学ぶいい経験になりましたし、お店での日常の仕事を通して異なったタイプの人々と知り合うのに非常に役に立ちました。　　了
